Growing up, Eric Appel confesses to being "that kid from school that always forced you to watch the dumb videos he made in the woods with his friends."
His career began as a writer and performer with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. Eric then went on to become the head writer for FUNNY OR DIE, where he began directing short films with the likes of Will Ferrell, Olivia Wilde, and Aaron Paul. His film “Field of Dreams 2: NFL Lockout” with Taylor Lautner received over 2 million hits. Eric has directed episodic television for shows like “Silicon Valley,” “New Girl,” “The Office,” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” He also wrote and directed “Son of Zorn,” starring Cheryl Hines, Johnny Pemberton, Tim Meadows and Jason Sudeikis.
Eric’s commercial credits include Audi featuring “Spiderman” actor Tom Holland, Heineken, T Mobile, Carl's Jr., and Smirnoff with agencies such as M/H VCCP, Anomaly, 72andSunny, Wieden + Kennedy, Pereira & O’Dell, and BBDO and T Mobile Direct.
Eric premiered ‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’ starring Daniel Radcliffe and Evan Rachel Wood at TIFF 2022. The film is a parodic take on Hollywood music biopics, following the rise of the legendary spoof artist, which Eric wrote alongside Weird Al Yankovic himself.
Eric is in production on the second season of “‘Die Hart,” starring Kevin Hart, John Travolta and Nathalie Emmanuel. The first season earned all three of them Emmy nominations.
